1. The "Chari" Light
Chari is famous for using hard light in a soft way. He often uses a single bare bulb or a magnum reflector to create deep shadows, but he bounces fill light subtly. A great PDF will include lighting diagrams showing angles and distances.

How to Reverse-Engineer a Chari Portrait (Step-by-Step)
If you want to create a PDF for yourself based on his techniques, follow this workflow:
- The Asaro Head: Before touching a pencil, study the Asaro head (a planar model of the face). Chari’s genius is simplifying complex curves into flat, sharp planes.
- The Burnished Base: Apply a light layer of graphite powder (or 4B pencil) to the entire face area. Blend with a tissue once.
- The Lift: Use a kneaded eraser shaped into a sharp wedge to "draw" the light. Pull out the highlights on the nose, cheekbones, and brow ridge.
- The Finish: Go back in with a sharp 6B. Do not draw outlines. Draw the shapes of shadow (eyebrow as a triangle, the nostril as a comma).
1. The "Single Source" Natural Light Mastery
Chari is famous for using only one window. The best PDF guides will feature diagrams showing the subject positioned at a 45-to-90-degree angle to the window.
- The Technique: Expose for the highlights on the cheekbone; let the rest fall into Zone 2 or 3 darkness.
- Gear Tip: Use a black V-flat (or simply a black bed sheet) on the fill side to absorb ambient light and increase contrast.
1. The "Unblended" Texture
Most portrait artists blend until the skin looks like plastic. Chari does the opposite. He leaves the tooth of the paper visible.
- Technique: Using the side of a 2B pencil or charcoal stick on medium-tooth paper (like Canson Mi-Teintes) to create a "broken" tone.
- Why it works: It mimics the microscopic texture of human skin.
Part 5: A Practical Workflow Based on Aditya Chari’s Method
Let’s assume you have downloaded what you believe is the best Aditya Chari portrait techniques PDF. How do you apply it in a 30-minute shoot? Here is a sample cheat sheet taken from high-quality guides.
Phase 1: Scouting (15 minutes)
- Find a room with one large window.
- Ensure walls are dark (dark grey, navy, or wood paneling). White walls ruin the contrast.
- PDF Checklist: Check the "Ambient Spill" box.
Phase 2: Camera Settings
- Mode: Manual.
- Shutter: 1/125 (to freeze micro-movements).
- Aperture: f/2.8 to f/4 (separation without losing the ear entirely).
- ISO: As low as possible (usually 400–1600 indoors).
- White Balance: Tungsten or Kelvin 3200k (even if shooting daylight, this warms the skin).
Phase 3: The "Chari" Pose
- Subject leans slightly away from the light.
- Chin is raised 10 degrees (defiant, not submissive).
- Eyes look toward the lens, but the head is turned 3/4 away.
Phase 4: The Edit (5 minutes in Lightroom)
- Basic Panel: Drop highlights (-80), raise shadows (+30) only slightly (keep contrast high).
- Tone Curve: Lift the black point (to fade the shadows slightly – a classic film look).
- Calibration: Blue Primary Hue shifted towards cyan (-10).
