Report: Analysis of the "Assetto Corsa Traffic Planner" Mod
Date: 2024-05-20 (Current context date for analysis)
Subject: Third-party modification for Kunos Simulazioni's Assetto Corsa
Type: Utility / Gameplay Enhancement Mod
Platform: PC (primarily Steam version)
3. Installation & Requirements
- Base Game: Assetto Corsa (Ultimate Edition recommended)
- Essential Mods:
- Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) v0.1.79 or newer (required for traffic logic)
- Content Manager (strongly recommended for configuration)
- Installation Steps (typical):
- Download
TrafficPlanner.zip from official sources (e.g., RaceDepartment, SRP Discord).
- Extract to
assettocorsa/extension/config/traffic_planner/.
- Enable in CSP settings (
CSP > AI & Traffic > Traffic Planner).
- Load a compatible map and start a “Track Day” session.
- Open Traffic Planner UI (default
Ctrl + T or via CSP Apps).
Note: Not all mod maps include native traffic planner support. Users often need to create or download pre-made traffic path files (.json or .tp.json).
Installing Traffic Car Packs
The traffic planner needs cars to spawn. If you don't have specific traffic mods, the planner will spawn default Kunos cars (Abarth 500s, BMW M4s). For realism, install:
- Traffic Pack by Alex (Free on Discord)
- SRP Car Pack 1-4
- Japanese Traffic Pack (Honda Fit, Prius, Taxis)
Once installed, you must tell the Traffic Planner which car_groups to use via the in-game app UI.
6. Limitations & Known Issues
- No Collision Awareness (in basic version): Traffic cars do not actively avoid the player – they may pit-maneuver you if you stop in their lane. Advanced CSP versions include “yield to player” logic.
- Path Creation Complexity: Manual path drawing is time-consuming. Community shared path files are essential.
- Multiplayer Desync: Traffic Planner is not officially MP-compatible; positions of traffic cars differ across clients.
- No Damage Modeling: Traffic cars cannot break down or become disabled.
- FPS Drops on Low-End PCs: Sudden spawns or despawns cause stutter.
2. Behavior Profiles
- Cruise Mode: AI stays within 80-120% of speed limit. Realistic lane changes.
- Aggressive Mode: Frequent lane changes, close following distances. Great for "No Hesi" simulation.
- Sunday Driver: Cars randomly brake, take 10 seconds to reach 60mph. Infuriating but realistic.
