Cambridge Lower Secondary Complete English 7 Student Book (Second Edition)
Read the text below carefully.
The Lost World of the Deep
Beneath the ocean’s surface lies a world more mysterious than outer space. The deep sea – anything below 200 metres – is pitch dark, near freezing, and under crushing pressure. Yet life thrives there. Anglerfish dangle glowing lures to attract prey. Giant tube worms cluster around hydrothermal vents, surviving without sunlight by converting chemicals into energy.
Scientists estimate that over 80% of the ocean remains unexplored. Each deep-sea expedition reveals bizarre creatures: transparent sea cucumbers, dumbo octopuses with ear-like fins, and zombie worms that eat whale bones. Understanding this ecosystem matters – the deep sea regulates our climate and provides resources for medicine. However, deep-sea mining and pollution now threaten these fragile habitats.
Choose one topic.
Option 1 – Descriptive paragraph
Write a short paragraph (80–100 words) describing a journey to the bottom of the ocean. Use at least three of these words: dark, pressure, creature, silent, mysterious.
Option 2 – Persuasive letter
Write a letter to a local newspaper (80–100 words) arguing that deep-sea mining should be banned. Give two reasons and a solution. What is the robin's behavior towards humans
