Backup Your Settings and Files: Before making any changes, ensure you have backed up your custom settings, brushes, and any important files.
Understand Your System: Make sure you understand your operating system (Windows XP, 7, etc.) and have administrative privileges.
Delete the following folders entirely:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ProtexisC:\ProgramData\Protexis (may be hidden – type this path manually)Microsoft’s "Compatibility Telemetry" sometimes sees that CorelDRAW is looking for Protexis and helpfully re-registers the missing components. To stop this:
Task Scheduler (search for it in Start Menu).Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience.Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser.ProgramDataUpdater.Since we want to target Protexis-cmd specifically, we need to use the Command Prompt as an administrator. Corel X5 Remove Protexis-cmd
Press Windows Key + X and select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
Type the following command exactly to find the process:
tasklist | findstr protexis
Note the Process ID (PID) number.
Kill the process by force:
taskkill /F /IM protexis-cmd.exe
(If you get "not found," try taskkill /F /IM PSIService.exe)
Now, delete the source files. In the same Admin CMD window, type:
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Protexis\
rmdir /s /q "License Service"
For 64-bit Windows, also delete:
cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Protexis\
rmdir /s /q "License Service"
Restart your computer.
Warning: After doing this, CorelDRAW X5 will likely ask for re-activation. Use your legitimate serial number. It will now work because the broken service is gone.
Protexis went out of business years ago. Their servers are offline. Furthermore, their driver signing certificates have expired. On modern versions of Windows (especially Windows 10 and 11), the operating system sees Protexis-cmd as an unsigned, untrusted legacy driver. As a result, Windows blocks it from running.
When Windows blocks Protexis, CorelDRAW X5 panics. It thinks it is running on a pirated copy or that its licensing hardware has been tampered with. To protect itself (ironically), it refuses to open.
This method stops the service from running automatically without deleting files. It is reversible. Before You Start
Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. After a reboot, Protexis-cmd will no longer run in the background.
