Game Dev Tycoon Unlimited Research Points May 2026
⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ – "Finally, I can live my dream as a visionary, not an accountant"
By: PixelPunkDev, 20 hours played
Let me be real: Game Dev Tycoon is a fantastic simulation of the game industry's highs and lows. But after my 10th playthrough, watching my small studio bleed money while waiting for "AI NPC Behavior" to finish researching at a snail's pace... I snapped.
Then I found the Unlimited Research Points mod.
The Good (aka the power trip):
- No more choosing between "Faster Engines" and "Better Graphics" – just get both. And the other five options.
- You can unlock Motion Capture, 3D, Voice Acting, and Online Multiplayer by year 2. Your first game? A sci-fi MMO with ray tracing. On the NES equivalent. It's ridiculous and glorious.
- Suddenly, every game you make is a "Genre-Defining Masterpiece." Reviewers give you 10/10 because you've stacked so many tech features that the game literally can't score below a 9.
- The power curve breaks in the most entertaining way. You go from garage dev to virtual EA in under 3 in-game years.
The Bad (why it's not 5 stars):
- You lose the struggle. Half the fun of GD Tycoon is that tough call between research and marketing. With unlimited points, that tension vanishes. You're just clicking "Research All" every month.
- The game becomes a sandbox, not a sim. That's fine if you're into that, but don't expect the usual "one more game" tension loop.
- The mid-game collapses. Once every tech is maxed by year 5, you're just reskinning the same perfect game engine over and over. The "What should I research next?" question is gone forever.
The Verdict:
Use this mod if you've already beaten the game legitimately and want a victory lap where you crush your rivals with a game called "Cyber Werewolf: Infinite" that has 47 different tech features. But if it's your first playthrough? Stay away. You'll ruin the carefully balanced suffering that makes success feel earned.
TL;DR: Unlimited Research Points turns Game Dev Tycoon into Game Dev Power Fantasy. Fun for an afternoon, but shallow for a career. game dev tycoon unlimited research points
Game Dev Tycoon , "unlimited" research points (RP) can be achieved through legitimate late-game mechanics or via save file modification. To legitimately maximize your RP income, focus on unlocking and funding the Research and Development (R&D) Lab, which generates points passively. Strategic Optimization (Legitimate Methods)
For a high-efficiency playthrough, prioritize these activities to maximize RP generation:
Fund the R&D Lab: Once you reach the fourth office, invest in the R&D Lab. It generates RP passively while funded, even if no specific projects are active. Increasing its monthly budget directly boosts research output.
High-Yield Game Combinations: Certain genre-topic pairings consistently yield higher RP. Effective combinations include: Action-RPG Simulation-Education Strategy-Fantasy Adventure-Dungeon
Engine Creation: Building custom game engines is a major source of RP. The more features you add, the more RP is generated during development.
Staff Training: Hire employees with high research stats and invest in training programs like "Advanced Research Techniques" to increase the amount of RP they generate during daily tasks. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ – "Finally, I can live my dream
Targeted Contract Work: Focus on medium and large contracts. The "Design a Board Game" medium contract is noted for providing significant RP.
Game Reports: Always generate a report after releasing a game. It provides a simple, guaranteed influx of RP. Save File Modification (Cheat Method)
For literal "unlimited" points, you can edit your local save files:
Disable Steam Cloud Sync in the Game Dev Tycoon properties on Steam.
Navigate to your local save folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[YourID]\239820\remote.
Open your save file (typically file__0.localstorage) with a text editor and search for the "researchPoints" value to manually set it to any number. No more choosing between "Faster Engines" and "Better
5. Long-Term Consequences on Game Balance
| Aspect | Normal Game | Unlimited RP |
|--------|-------------|---------------|
| Strategic depth | High – resource management is key | Very low – no meaningful choices |
| Difficulty curve | Gradual | Almost flat |
| Replayability | High – different tech paths | Low – linear progression |
| Time to beat (in-game years) | ~30-40 years | ~10-15 years |
| Staff management | Critical for RP generation | Almost irrelevant |
Method 1: The R&D Lab "Money Pit" Strategy (Legitimate)
This is the intended way to get massive amounts of research points in the late game without cheating.
- Unlock the R&D Lab: This requires an office size of at least 2,000 sq. ft. and approximately $4M in capital. You must also research "World Report" in the R&D tab.
- Build the Hardware Lab: Inside the R&D room, build a Hardware Lab station.
- Research "Cute" or "Grid" Consoles: These console projects are the best for farming points because they take a long time to complete.
- The Glitch/Exploit:
- Start researching a console (e.g., "Cute Console").
- Once the research bar is full and the console is "ready," do not release it.
- As long as the project sits there "Ready," the employees assigned to the R&D lab will continue to generate Research Points and Tech Points passively without working on a new project.
- Assign your highest skilled staff to the lab and just let the game run. They will stockpile points indefinitely while you work on games with other employees.
Legality, safety, and community considerations
- Modding and local save edits are typically allowed for single-player use but can void support or conflict with EULA in some cases.
- Downloading third-party trainers or executables carries malware risk—only use trusted sources.
- Using cheats in multiplayer or competitive leaderboards can be considered cheating and may result in bans.
The Cons (Boredom Hell)
- Destroys progression: Half the fun is deciding what to research next. With unlimited RP, you just click every button instantly.
- The "Cheat" flag: The game has a built-in anti-piracy measure. If you use a bad trainer, the game will detect you. Your company will be "Sued for Piracy" and all your games will sell 0 copies. (The Game Dev Tycoon developers famously did this to pirate copies of the game itself).
- Burnout: Unlimited resources often lead to quitting the save file 30 minutes later because there is no challenge.
4. Immediate Effects on Gameplay
With unlimited RP:
- Instant tech unlock: All research topics become available immediately.
- No trade-offs: The player never has to choose between engine upgrades or new gameplay features.
- Faster progression: Console generations and advanced features (MMO, VR) can be unlocked years ahead of schedule.
- Higher game scores: Using top-tier tech early leads to higher review scores and sales.
- Reduced staff dependency: Normally, researchers and R&D rooms are needed to generate RP. With unlimited RP, these become obsolete.
Installation (Steam)
- Go to the Steam Workshop for Game Dev Tycoon.
- Search for "CheatEngine" (by Nox or similar trusted creators).
- Click Subscribe.
- Launch the game. You will see a "Cheat Engine" button in the top toolbar.
Part 6: Step-by-Step (Noob-Friendly) Cheat Engine Tutorial
If you have never used Cheat Engine before, here is the idiot-proof guide for unlimited research points in Game Dev Tycoon.
- Download Cheat Engine 7.5 (official site only).
- Run Game Dev Tycoon and load your save.
- Open Cheat Engine -> Click the computer icon (Select Process) -> Choose
game_dev_tycoon.exe.
- Enter your current RP (e.g.,
143) into the "Value" box.
- Click First Scan. (Left panel will show hundreds of addresses).
- Go back to the game. Research something cheap (e.g., "AI Scripts" for 50 RP). Your RP is now
93.
- Enter
93 into Cheat Engine. Click Next Scan.
- Repeat Step 6 & 7 until only 1 or 2 addresses remain.
- Double-click those addresses to add them to the bottom panel.
- Double-click the "Value" column and change it to
999999.
- Go back to the game. Done. You now have unlimited research points.
Pro tip: Check the "Active" box (red X) to lock the value so it never drops below 999,999.
