Hinari Login Guide: Understanding Your ID, Password, and UPD Access
If you are trying to access Hinari (often part of the Research4Life program providing free or low-cost access to scientific literature), you may have encountered the term UPD (User Profile Data). This post explains how login credentials work and what "UPD" means for your account.
Error #1: “Your account has been suspended”
- Why: Inactivity for more than 180 days (new policy as of Jan 2026).
- Fix: You cannot unsuspend it yourself. Your Focal Point must reactivate it. Email them with your ID and request a “suspension lift.”
If you have a Research4Life / OpenAthens Account:
- Go to the OpenAthens login page (
login.openathens.net). - Click “Forgotten your password?” (not “Forgotten username”).
- Enter your Hinari Login ID (your registered email address).
- Check your inbox for an email from “OpenAthens Password Reset.” Click the secure link.
- Create a new password that meets the -UPD- complexity requirements:
- Minimum 12 characters
- At least one uppercase letter
- At least one number
- At least one special character (e.g.,
! @ # $ %)
- Confirm the change. Your new password is active immediately.
Error #3: “Redirect loop” after login
- Why: Browser cookie conflict with old Hinari sessions.
- Fix: Clear your browser cache for all
who.intandresearch4life.orgdomains. Use a private/incognito window.
🔁 Keep Your Access Active
- Passwords may expire every 6–12 months – always ask for the “UPDATED” version before the expiry date.
- Do not share your personal login with others. Violations can revoke your institution’s access.

Access through Institutions
- If your institution has subscribed to Hinari, you might also be able to access the resources through your institution's library or online portal. Sometimes, direct access through an IP address or through an Athens/ Shibboleth login is available.

What to Do If Your Institution’s Password Is Not Working
If you are using a shared Hinari Login ID Password (e.g., lib_hinari01 / Hinari2024), and it fails: Why: Inactivity for more than 180 days (new
- Check the date: Shared passwords under the -UPD- system change quarterly (Jan, Apr, July, Oct).
- Look for a library notice: Most libraries post the new password on a secure internal portal (e.g., Canvas, Moodle, or a library intranet). Do not email the password—check the official announcement.
- Request the updated credentials: Email your librarian with the subject line: “Request for updated Hinari shared login.”
