1. Illuminated Warning Lights
Your dashboard will look like a Christmas tree. Expect to see: ABS Warning Light Brake System Warning Light (yellow
- ABS Warning Light
- Brake System Warning Light (yellow or red)
- Check Engine Light (in some cases)
- "Brake Override" or "Hybrid System" warning
Safety first
- Wear gloves and eye protection.
- Work on a cool engine; disconnect the battery if you’ll probe electrical connectors.
When is it actually a mechanical failure?
If you have performed the calibration 3 times, checked the battery, and the code returns immediately upon turning the wheel, look at these parts: Safety first
- Torque Sensor inside the EPS motor (Requires steering column replacement on most Toyotas).
- Clock Spring (Check for broken internal ribbon).
- Wiring harness (Corrosion at the EPS connector under the dash).
Step 4: Multimeter Testing
Set your multimeter to DC voltage.
- Reference voltage test: With the key on (engine off), back-probe the sensor connector. You should see 5V between the VCC pin and ground pin. If you see 0V, there is an open circuit in the reference wire.
- Ground test: Check continuity between the sensor ground pin and chassis ground. Resistance should be less than 1 ohm.
- Signal test: The signal wire should fluctuate between 0.5V (pedal released) and 4.5V (pedal fully pressed). If it stays at 0V or 5V, the sensor is dead.
