Mini Vmac | Rom [portable]
Mini vMac is a lightweight, open-source emulator designed to run software from early Macintosh computers (1984–1996) based on Motorola 680x0 microprocessors ROM image file
is a critical requirement for it to function, as it contains the low-level software originally stored on the physical chips of early Macs. Core ROM Requirements Essential File:
The emulator will not boot without a valid ROM file located in the same directory as the application. File Naming: mini vmac rom
For the default Macintosh Plus emulation, the file must be named Format & Size: A standard Macintosh Plus ROM file should be exactly
(131,072 bytes). Mini vMac verifies the checksum on launch to ensure the file is a known, valid image for the chosen model. Supported Models and ROM Types Mini vMac is a lightweight, open-source emulator designed
While Mini vMac defaults to Macintosh Plus emulation, it can be compiled to support various other early 68k models, each requiring its specific ROM file: Macintosh Model Required ROM File Name Supported System Software Macintosh 128K/512K Mac128K.ROM Up to System 2.0.1 Macintosh Plus System 1.1 – 7.5.5 Macintosh SE System 2.0 – 7.5.5 Macintosh SE FDHD SEFDHD.ROM System 6.0.3 – 7.5.5 Macintosh II System 2.0 – 7.5.5
Note: Macintosh II emulation is currently considered experimental/alpha and may accept ROMs from the Mac IIx or SE/30 if renamed. Options in Mini vMac - Gryphel Project Error #1: "ROM Check Sum Error" Cause: The
Error #1: "ROM Check Sum Error"
Cause: The ROM file is corrupted, truncated, or belongs to a different Mac model.
Fix: Verify the file size. For a Mac Plus emulation, it must be exactly 131,072 bytes (128 KB). Use a hex editor to confirm the first two bytes are 0x4A 0x4E (ASCII 'J' 'N', a Mac ROM signature).
What Filename Does Mini vMac Expect?
Regardless of where you get it, the emulator looks for a specific filename:
- Default:
vMac.ROM - Alternative (for newer builds):
MacPlus.ROMPlace this file in the same directory as the Mini vMac executable.
Step 1: Download Mini vMac
Visit the official Gryphel project site (maintained by Paul C. Pratt). Download the pre-built binary for your OS:

Error #2: Emulator Starts, But the Screen is a Scrambled Grid of Pixels
Cause: The ROM is from a Mac 128K or 512K, but Mini vMac is compiled for Plus mode. Fix: You need a different build of Mini vMac. Visit the "Variations" section of the official site to download a build configured for the original 128K ROM.
