Not everything is about power levels. Sometimes, the scariest monsters are human. won't they" bullcrap.
Anime: Monster (A classic) Recently rediscovered by a new generation, Monster is a 74-episode slow burn. Dr. Kenzo Tenma saves a boy’s life instead of a politician. Years later, that boy becomes a serial killer. Tenma must hunt him down across post-Cold War Germany. No superpowers, just incredible suspense.
Manga: Goodnight Punpun (by Inio Asano) A word of caution: This is not for the faint of heart. The main character is drawn as a crudely illustrated bird in a world of realistic backgrounds. It follows Punpun from elementary school to young adulthood as he deals with depression, trauma, and the cruelty of life. It is the definitive "slice of despair" manga.
While anime is great, some of the best popular manga recommendations do not have good anime adaptations (or don't have one yet). You must read these.
Shonen is the most popular demographic—think big fights, friendship, and training arcs. But the modern era has raised the bar.
Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen If you want fluid, movie-quality animation in every episode, this is it. The story follows Yuji Itadori, a high schooler who swallows a cursed talisman (a finger of the most powerful demon in history) to save his friends. The fight choreography by studio MAPPA is revolutionary. Be warned: the stakes are high, and characters die.
Manga: Chainsaw Man (by Tatsuki Fujimoto) Don’t let the weird name fool you. Chainsaw Man is the most punk-rock thing to hit the industry in a decade. Denji is a boy in crippling debt who merges with his pet chainsaw demon to become a public safety hunter. It is gory, unhinged, surprisingly philosophical, and utterly unpredictable. Part two is currently running and is even weirder.
Why it’s popular: It is the most realistic high school romance. No love triangles that last 200 chapters. No "will they, won't they" bullcrap.
