Resident Evil 4 (Wii) — Save Data Guide
1. Game & Platform Overview
- Game: Resident Evil 4 (Wii edition – often called the "Wii Edition").
- Platform: Nintendo Wii (also playable on Wii U via vWii mode).
- Save data type: Standard Wii save file (stored on internal NAND or SD card).
Ethical Considerations: Cheating vs. Quality of Life
Purists argue that downloading Resident Evil 4 Wii save data ruins the survival horror experience. The thrill of RE4 is meticulously conserving shotgun shells for the cabin fight. Using a 100% file to start a New Game on Professional with infinite ammo removes the tension.
However, many players use downloaded saves for legitimate reasons:
- Lost progress: Your Wii’s NAND memory failed (common on early Wii models).
- The Mercenaries unlock: You beat the story but cannot grind the Handcannon due to time constraints.
- Second playthrough only: You want to experience the story with overpowered weapons for fun.
New Game Plus Behavior
When you load a cleared save file to start a new game, Resident Evil 4 carries over your inventory, money, and upgraded weapons. This is stored within that single save file slot. You do not need to manage multiple files to keep your gear; the game overwrites the previous chapter progress while retaining your inventory stats for the new playthrough.
Why Managing Your Save Data Matters
Unlike modern cloud-synced consoles, the Nintendo Wii stored saves directly to the internal memory (512 MB) or an SD card. Losing your Resident Evil 4 progress is devastating because the game rewards multiple playthroughs.
- The Mercenaries Grind: Unlocking the Handcannon requires getting five stars with every character on every stage. That is hours of gameplay.
- Bottle Caps: Collecting all the figurines requires specific shot efficiency in the Shooting Gallery.
- Professional Mode: One hit from a Ganado can send you back to the last typewriter, making a backup save a safety net.
How to Install (Two Methods)
Method 1 – SD Card Manual Copy (Only if save is “copyable”):
- Download the save (.bin or .dat file).
- On your PC, create this folder structure on the SD card:
SD:\private\wii\title\R44E01(Replace R44E01 with your region code:- R44E01 = USA
- R44P01 = PAL
- R44J01 = Japan)
- Place the save file inside as
data.bin. - Insert SD into Wii > Data Management > Save Data > Wii > SD Card tab.
- Select file > Copy to Wii System Memory.
Method 2 – Homebrew with SaveGame Manager GX (For non-copyable saves):
- Install the Homebrew Channel.
- Run SaveGame Manager GX.
- Use it to install downloaded saves regardless of copy protection flags. Note: Homebrew carries a small risk of bricking your Wii if done incorrectly. Proceed at your own risk.
