Symantec Endpoint Protection — Unmanaged Client Download
Critical Security Risks:
- No Policy Revocation: If a laptop is stolen, you cannot remotely wipe or disable the SEP client via a central server.
- Rogue Configurations: A user with admin rights could disable the unmanaged client permanently without IT knowing.
- Version Fragmentation: You will manually need to upgrade unmanaged clients from version 14.3 to 14.3 RU8 (or later). There is no auto-upgrade path.
Step 3: Configure Local Policy (Optional but Recommended)
- Without a management server, you must configure protection manually.
- Open the SEP client interface → Change Settings.
- Define:
- Virus and Spyware Protection (real-time scans, SONAR, Download Insight).
- Firewall policies (allow/block rules).
- Scheduled scans.
- Update frequency (default: every 4 hours from LiveUpdate).
3. Firewall Policy (If Installed)
During installation, you can choose to install the network threat protection component. If enabled:
- Set the firewall to Block All when not on corporate network (for laptops).
- Create allow rules for trusted applications.
