Contrary to many radio brands (Motorola, Kenwood) that use a generic USB-to-serial cable, the Tait TM8200 uses a proprietary 4-pin GX12 aviation-style connector on the radio’s front panel (some rear accessory versions exist). To interface with a modern PC (lacking a DB9 serial port), you have two options:

  1. Tait USB Programming Kit (Part # 596-00002-xx) – Includes a USB-to-RS232 smart converter built into a short cable terminating in the GX12 plug. This is plug-and-play with Windows 10/11.
  2. DIY approach (not recommended): A standard FTDI USB-to-RS232 cable + soldered GX12 plug. You must wire: Pin 2 (radio TX) to PC RX, Pin 3 (radio RX) to PC TX, Pin 4 (GND). Many users fail here due to level shifting issues.

B. Read the Radio

  1. Launch TPA.
  2. Select File → Read Radio.
  3. Power on TM8200.
  4. Choose correct COM port (check in Device Manager).
  5. Click Read. This downloads the current codeplug (settings file).
