Rustam had been a selka merchant in Tashkent’s Eski Juva bazaar for twelve years. He knew the weight of a silver bracelet in his palm before the scales confirmed it. But the world had moved online, and his daughter, Madina, kept telling him, “Ota, you need to learn Uzbek selka online. Better quality. Better price.”
He scoffed. “Real selka you touch. Real selka you hold.”
But tonight, the shop was empty. The new mall had swallowed his customers.
Madina didn’t argue. She just opened her laptop on his worn wooden counter. “Watch Kino with me first,” she said. “Then decide.”
She pulled up an old Uzbek film — Selka Ustasi (The Master of Silver). It was grainy, black-and-white, about a grandfather who refused to sell his craft online. Rustam recognized his own stubborn jaw in every frame.
Halfway through, the grandson in the film finally figured out how to film the engraving process in slow motion. He uploaded it. Buyers from Germany, Turkey, Japan appeared.
Rustam watched a single scene: a close-up of silver catching light, the chisel’s whisper. uzbek+selka+olish+kino+better
“That’s better than any mall,” he whispered.
Madina smiled. “Now let me show you how olish (buying/selling exchange) works online in Uzbek selka groups.”
By midnight, Rustam had posted his first video — a simple kumush bilaguzuk (silver bracelet) turning under his workshop lamp. By morning, three messages.
One was from a collector in Istanbul who wrote: "Better than anything in the Grand Bazaar."
Rustam looked at the laptop, then at his hands. Same hands. Same silver. Just a better door.
He typed back: "Yuboraman. Sizga narx yaxshi bo'ladi." — I will send it. Price will be good for you. The Better Take Rustam had been a selka
And for the first time in months, he didn't feel like a ghost in his own shop.

In recent years, Uzbek digital culture has witnessed a shift from traditional cinematic consumption to short-form, user-generated content colloquially termed selka olish (derived from “selfie taking”). This paper explores the sociotechnical and cultural reasons young Uzbeks perceive selka-based content as “better” than conventional kino (film). Using qualitative interviews and platform analysis (Telegram, Instagram, TikTok), we argue that accessibility, relatability, and algorithmic personalization make selka olish a preferred medium for identity expression and entertainment.

"Selka," rooted in Uzbek language and tradition, symbolizes a deep appreciation for community, storytelling, and artistry. In this context, Selka represents a platform or cultural movement dedicated to preserving and showcasing Uzbek narratives. It could also refer to a digital hub, app, or event series that uses Uzbek motifs, music, and art to enrich how stories are told on screen.
In Uzbek kino (or Hollywood movies dubbed in Uzbek), buying a car looks easy:
Why this isn't better for you: Movies never show the "Selka" nightmares. They don't show the cracked engine block, the twisted frame from an accident in the US, or the 3 AM argument with a seller in Olmazor. Kino sells emotion; reality sells compression tests.
If you think buying a car is like it is in the movies, you will lose money. Kino is entertainment. Selka olish is war.
Imagine a virtual film festival hosted via the Selka platform, where Uzbek directors showcase works set against iconic locations like Tashkent’s Khast Imam Complex or the Fergana Valley. Attendees could experience 360° VR tours of these sites before screenings, paired with Uzbek-language commentary and English subtitles. Post-screening Q&As with directors and musicians (e.g., featuring Uzbek pop artists like Mavzum) would deepen cultural connections.
