9. March Comes in Like a Lion (Anime & Manga)
- Genre: Slice of Life, Drama, Psychological
- Why it's great: Rei Kiriyama is a 17-year-old professional shogi player, but he suffers from severe depression and loneliness. This series is a tender, realistic, and often heartbreaking portrayal of mental health, found family, and the slow process of healing. It's also occasionally hilarious and uplifting. A true work of art.
- Anime vs. Manga: The anime (by Shaft) is a visual and auditory masterpiece, using abstract imagery to depict depression. The manga is equally brilliant, with expressive, sketch-like art. Both are top-tier.
- Where to start: Anime.
13. Chainsaw Man
- Genre: Action, Horror, Absurdist Comedy
- Anime Status: 1 Season (Movie coming) / Manga: Part 2 Ongoing
Denji is a poor teenager who merges with his pet chainsaw devil to become "Chainsaw Man." He joins the government's devil hunting agency because he wants to achieve the simple dream of... touching a girl's breasts.
Why recommend it? It is the most "Gen Z" anime ever made. It is chaotic, cinematic, and deeply sad beneath the gore. The manga is a wild ride of shock value that somehow turns into a heartbreaking story about wanting a normal life.
2. Death Note (Anime & Manga)
- Genre: Psychological Thriller, Supernatural, Crime
- Why it's great: A genius high school student finds a notebook that kills anyone whose name he writes in it. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game between him (Light Yagami) and the world's greatest detective (L). It's a brilliant exploration of justice, morality, and god complexes. The tension is relentless.
- Anime vs. Manga: Both are excellent and almost identical. The anime has a legendary soundtrack and voice acting. The manga has slightly more detail in the second half.
- Where to start: Anime (37 episodes, tight pacing).
9. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
- Genre: Adventure, Drama, Reincarnation
- Anime Status: Ongoing (Season 2)
- Manga/Light Novel: Complete (Light Novel)
A 34-year-old shut-in dies and is reincarnated into a magical world as a baby named Rudeus Greyrat. Retaining his past life's memories, he vows to live a full life without regrets, becoming a master of magic, swordsmanship, and... relationships.
Why recommend it? It is the grandfather of modern Isekai. The world-building is rich, the magic system is logical, and the character growth is slow but realistic. Note: The protagonist starts as a deeply flawed pervert; the story is about him growing out of that.
For Action & Adventure Lovers
These series feature incredible fights, high stakes, and memorable journeys.
The Heavyweight Titans (The "Start Here" Picks)
If you are new to the medium, these are the non-negotiable pillars that define modern anime. Attack on Titan - In a world where
- Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin): Review: A brutal masterpiece. What begins as a visceral horror-action series about giant man-eating humans evolves into a profound, gut-wrenching political thriller about the cycle of hatred, freedom, and moral gray zones. The animation by Wit Studio and later MAPPA is cinematic. Warning: It is emotionally devastating, but the payoff is the most tightly written conclusion in modern shonen.
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: Review: The perfect score. Often voted the #1 anime of all time, this is the gold standard for storytelling. It balances dark themes (human transmutation, war crimes) with heartfelt comedy and a cast of characters that all serve a purpose. If you only watch one anime in your life, make it this one. The manga is equally flawless.
12. Dorohedoro
- Genre: Gore Comedy, Dark Fantasy, Cyberpunk
- Anime Status: 1 Season (Cliffhanger) / Manga: Complete
In a grimy city called "The Hole," a man with a lizard head named Caiman hunts the Sorcerers who experiment on humans. He has amnesia, and a woman inside his mouth helps him identify who cursed him.
Why recommend it? It is weird, violent, and hilarious. The art style (by Q Hayashida) is gritty and unique. Unlike most anime, the "villains" (the Sorcerers) are actually pretty chill, and the protagonist is just a guy who loves gyoza (dumplings).
