If you are a Logic Pro X user diving into the world of third-party processing, you have likely encountered a frustrating speed bump: Logic Pro X does not support VST plugins.
Before you close this tab in disappointment, hear us out. Logic uses its own proprietary format, Audio Units (AU) , which is the native standard for macOS. While you cannot load a .vst file directly into Logic, the good news is that 99% of plugin manufacturers create their products in both VST and AU formats.
When we talk about "VST plugins for Logic," we are really talking about the culture of third-party plugins—the same developers and creative tools—just in the correct file format. Vst Plugins For Logic Pro X
Here is how to navigate the ecosystem, convert your old VSTs if necessary, and which "VST-style" AU plugins are worth installing today.
| Plugin | Type | Why it works for Logic users | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Xfer Records Serum | Wavetable Synth | The king of EDM. Comes in AU format. Maps perfectly to Logic’s Smart Controls. | | Vital Audio Vital | Wavetable Synth | Free. A direct VST alternative. The AU version runs with lower CPU than most paid VSTs. | | u-he Diva | Analog Modeling | Requires heavy CPU, but Logic’s “Freeze” function makes it usable. Better than any VST analog clone. | | Arturia Pigments | Polychrome Synth | Arturia’s installer detects Logic automatically and installs AU. Works flawlessly with Logic’s Step Sequencer. | Beyond the Stock Arsenal: A Guide to VST
Just because Logic doesn't natively read VSTs doesn't mean you have to abandon your favorite tools. You have three reliable workarounds.
With the shift to Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3 chips), the debate has changed. VST3 is technically superior to VST2, but Logic still ignores it. Pros: No conversion necessary; runs the original VST code
However, Apple recently introduced AUv3 (Audio Unit version 3), which is a mobile-first format that works on iPad and Mac. Many developers are now writing AUv3 plugins that run natively on Logic for iPad.
Prediction: By 2026, third-party plugins will be released as AUv3 by default, and VST support will slowly fade on macOS. If you are setting up Logic Pro X today, do not install VSTs. Uncheck them during installation. Only install the Audio Unit (AU) components.
Tools needed: Kushview Element, Blue Cat’s PatchWork, or Ddmf Metaplugin.
These are host plugins that run inside Logic Pro X. You load the adapter as an Audio Unit, and then inside the adapter, you load your VST file.
