Step 2: Installation (If you can call it that)

Winbox is portable. There is no installer.

1. Download winbox.exe to a folder (e.g., C:\Tools\Winbox\).
2. (Optional) Create a shortcut on your desktop.
3. Run the executable. No admin rights required unless using raw sockets.

Scenario 3: Disaster Recovery – No IP Configuration

After a factory reset on a core router, the management IP was lost. Winbox 2.2.18’s MAC Winbox feature (which is slightly more aggressive in discovery than newer versions on certain switch chips) located the router within 2 seconds, allowing a full restore from backup. winbox 2.2.18

Method B: MAC Winbox (Layer 2 – No IP Needed)

This is Winbox’s killer feature:

1. Click the "Neighbors" tab.
2. Winbox 2.2.18 will broadcast discovery probes.

4. Select it and click "Connect." (Note: MAC Winbox works only within the same broadcast domain.)
