9. Troubleshooting Common PVRX2 Issues
If you find one in a garage sale or your attic, here is a quick fix guide:
- "No Signal" on digital channels: Perform a factory reset. The PVRX2 sometimes loses frequency tables after a broadcaster repack. Scan manually using the channel numbers (e.g., UHF 32).
- Recording stops at 4GB: This is normal (FAT32 limitation). The unit will start a new file (e.g., Movie_01, Movie_02). It will play seamlessly.
- Box freezes on startup: Unplug the USB drive. Boot the box. Plug the USB drive back in. The index file may be corrupted. Run the "HDD Check" utility in the menu.
- Remote works intermittently: The capacitors on the IR receiver board inside the PVRX2 degrade. Re-soldering the 47uF capacitor on the front panel PCB fixes this 90% of the time.
The Community Fix:
Because Wintal essentially used a "generic" chassis (sold elsewhere as the Digicrystal 9077P, Supernet 1080P, or Digenius 9022), the open-source community developed Custom Firmware (CFW) . The most famous was "Sathack" or "Slug" firmware. Installing CFW unlocked: Wintal International PVRX2 Player
- Network connectivity (if you soldered a network header onto the PCB).
- Telnet access to the Linux-based OS.
- FTP copying – Allowing you to copy recorded
.MPG files to your PC over a home network.
- Removal of Macrovision (for backing up your personal recordings).
This hackability turned the $100 PVRX2 into a $500 network appliance for DIY enthusiasts. Wintal International PVRX2 Player

If you have a Sony Trinitron CRT television and you want to record modern digital broadcasts to watch in the proper 4:3 or 576i format, the PVRX2 is perfect. Modern HD PVRs output 1080p, which looks terrible downscaled. The PVRX2 outputs native SD. "No Signal" on digital channels: Perform a factory reset
