These are JavaScript runtimes, used by the extension to communicate with the VLC media player and manage argument passing to it. Currently, the NodeJS runtime works across Windows, Linux, and macOS platforms, while the BunJS runtime works on Linux and macOS. Users can install both runtimes and toggle between them via the options page. BunJS runtime does not include the native executable. You must have BunJS installed on your system before using it. However, NodeJS includes the native binary for all operating systems.
How can I install and test the developer version of this extension on my Chrome browser to try out new features?
First, download the latest commit from GitHub and extract it to a local directory. Next, open the "chrome://extensions/" page in a browser tab and ensure that Developer Mode is enabled. Optionally disable the active extension from the WebStore to avoid having duplicate icons in the toolbar. Drag the "v3" directory from the extracted files into the Extensions page that you opened earlier. The extension will now be added to Chrome, and its action button will be hidden in the Extensions popup (you can pin it if you prefer).
Next, download the latest version of the native client library for your operating system and extract it into a separate local directory. Inside the "app" folder, open the "config.js" file in a text editor and add the temporary ID of the newly installed extension. You can find this ID by clicking the "Details" button for the extension in the Extensions tab. After adding the ID, install the updated native client, which now supports the new extension. To verify everything is working, try sending media from your browser to VLC.
