How To Update Serum In Fl Studio May 2026

Technical Paper: Updating Serum within FL Studio

Version: 1.0
Applies to: FL Studio 20, FL Studio 21, FL Studio 2024+
Target Plugin: Xfer Records Serum (Synthesizer)
Difficulty: Intermediate

1. Overview

Updating Serum is a two-part process: updating the plugin files via the Xfer Records website/portal and ensuring FL Studio recognizes the new version. FL Studio does not manage VST updates internally; they must be done through the plugin manufacturer.

2. Prerequisites

Before proceeding, ensure the following: how to update serum in fl studio

  • FL Studio is closed. Failure to close FL Studio may result in file locking errors.
  • You have a valid Serum license (rent-to-own or full). Updates are free for license holders.
  • Your Splice account credentials (if using Splice for updates) or your Xfer Records account.
  • Administrator privileges on your Windows or macOS machine (for installation permissions).

Method 1: The Automatic Way (Via FL Studio)

This method works best if you installed FL Studio and Serum in their default locations (Program Files).

Step 1: Open the Plugin Manager

  1. Open FL Studio.
  2. Go to the top menu bar and click Options > Manage plugins.
    • Alternative: Press F8 on your keyboard to open the Plugin Picker, then click the wrench icon at the top right to open the Plugin Manager.

Step 2: Verify the "Update" Checkbox

  1. Look at the center column of the Plugin Manager window. You should see a heading titled "Plugin information".
  2. Ensure the box labeled "Verify plugins" is checked.
  3. Ensure the box labeled "Update (re-scan previously verified plugins)" is also checked.

Step 3: Force a Rescan

  1. Click the Find Plugins button (usually located at the top left of the Plugin Manager window).
  2. FL Studio will now scan your plugin folders.
  3. If FL Studio detects a newer version of Serum in your folder than the one currently loaded in its database, it will update the entry automatically.

Step 4: Refresh the Database

  1. Once the scan is complete, click Window > Plugin Picker (or press F8).
  2. Locate Serum in the list. It should now reflect the updated version.
  3. Note: If Serum was currently open in your project, you may need to close and reopen the plugin window for the visual change to take effect.

Part 6: What’s New? (Why Bother Updating?)

If you are updating from an older version (pre-1.35), here is what you have been missing. Technical Paper: Updating Serum within FL Studio Version:

  • High-quality Stretch Mode: Time-stretch wavetables with zero artifacts.
  • New Filters: "Dirty" and "Diode" filters for analog warmth.
  • MSEG Editor Improvements: Copy/paste envelopes and smoother drawing.
  • Apple Silicon Native: If you use a Mac M1/M2/M3, Serum now runs at lightning speed without Rosetta 2.
  • Over 150 New Wavetables: Free additions from Deadmau5 and Steve Duda.

Bonus: How to Update Serum from the Beta to the Stable Release

If you are on the Splice Rent-to-Own plan or a beta tester:

  • Splice users: Open the Splice desktop app. Go to "My Library". Find Serum. Click the gear icon > "Check for updates". Splice will automatically push the latest stable build into your FL Studio VST folder.
  • Beta users: You must manually download the stable release from the Xfer website, as beta versions expire. Splice does not provide beta versions.

2. Backup Your User Presets & Wavetables

The Serum update process usually leaves your user data alone, but rarely, a rogue installer can reset the directory paths. Don't risk losing 200 hours of sound design. FL Studio is closed

  • Locate your Serum Presets folder: By default, it is in Documents > Xfer > Serum Presets.
  • Copy the entire Serum Presets folder to your desktop or an external drive.

Step 3: Run the Installer (Mac - Apple Silicon/Intel)

  1. Quit FL Studio.
  2. Run the .pkg file.
  3. For M1/M2/M3 Macs, make sure you select the Apple Silicon Native option if offered. Otherwise, choose VST3 or AU (FL Studio supports all three). FL Studio runs natively on Apple Silicon; using a native Serum VST3 prevents Rosetta 2 overhead.
